About The Episode

After getting his first dog, at 7-years old, there was no turning back. Tyson, a Rottweiler, became the sibling that Devon Apodaca, an only child, had previously never had but always wanted.

The timing, it turned out, was crucial. During his school years, Devon faced some bullying. While he had trouble finding solace in other people, he found it in Tyson.

Devon’s personal and emotional relationship with dogs inspired him, from a young age, to help animals when he got older. Initially, that goal was to be a vet. He started volunteering at a shelter at 19, eventually rising up the ranks from a kennel attendant to then becoming Executive Director at 26 years old.

He works at the Humane Society of Imperial County, a small community located along the US/Mexico border region, where they have limited resources and allegiances compared to other shelters and rescues in other cities. Despite the additional hardships, on top of the usual rescue difficulties, Devon has stuck with it and kept pushing. The goal of Devon and the Humane Society is to treat their dogs and animals with the same respect and love as they give us. And they’ve already made a difference.

About The Guest - Devon Apodaca

Devon Apodaca is the Executive Director at the Humane Society of Imperial County, trying to save one dog at a time in a rural California community along the US/Mexico border region. Being in an economically disadvantaged area along the Border Region has meant dealing with limited resources, overcoming language and cultural barriers, and managing the ever-increasing number of strays/medical emergencies of pets. Devon has been impacted by many dogs who have touched his life in profound ways enough for him to carry on regardless of the many obstacles, politics, and limitations he faces on a daily basis never losing hope of the end result.
